Göcek, Turkey has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean. Tall mountains surround numerous protected bays and dense forests loom over the crystal clear water. Honestly on the surface it seems perfect. But these mountains create extremely deep anchorages so boaters are forced to anchor very close to land and tie lines ashore. This situation can be very dangerous if strong winds come from the wrong direction, which is actually not all that unco...

If you wanted to anchor off the Greek island to shelter from the weather, it would be perfectly legal if you claim force majeure. Obviously this is subjective, but I doubt Greek authorities would give you any trouble. Big fan - love watching the videos!

Spring sailing in the Med. Put a weather map on a Dart board, throw arrows on the board blindfolded and you will be as accurate as the weather predictions from various weather maps. Just have to accept it and enjoy the few times the prediction is almost wright. Despite all that we do enjoy sailing to different countries, the beauty and cultures and not least the food. Stay safe and enjoy your time in Europe.

Sounds like another day in paradise to me 😅 can totally relate to how fast situations change once the season shifts from sailing season to monsoon season here in Langkawi. 360 degree wind direction changes in just a few hours and zero to 30 knots of wind of course all while we are anchoring in a bay filled with sailboats and zero wind when trying to sail. 😂 Humbled and confused. ❤ Thank you for the video guys!

Do you use a pilot guide by any chance? Invaluable, but guess you'd need a whole stack of them. We love sailing from Gocek and have been many a time. Great to see you at places we've also been to. Happy to see you sorted a mooring out. Med mooring sure takes some getting used to. Even so, as many times as we've med moored, I still sleep with one ear open and that one ear has saved the day on occasion too. Fair winds Buds!

I believe that line is poly something that floats. The last thing you want is to have a regular line get tangled in the prop when you decide to make a run for it. BTW, props to Deseree (sp?) for handling the lines and kayak so efficiently and without drama.

Hey Atticus crew. What a gorgeous cruising area! You handled the challenge well and were rewarded with a nice dinner out. And you scored a bunch of fresh food. What could be better? RE: your anchor rode. I'm thinking you might want to invest in 200' (or so) of heavy nylon rode to back up the chain. It doesn't weigh all that much. Around here (Pacific Northwest, Inside Passage) we are frequently anchoring our little old trawler in 100' of water (and more) relatively close to a steep shore, on bottoms that vary. Stern ties are common. We only carry 200' of 3/8" chain, but we have an additional 200' of nylon rode, AND our anchor is seriously oversized. It is a Forfjord #6, which is generally used on 50' commercial fishing boats in this region. Those guys don't muck around when it comes to ground tackle. The nylon rode absorbs shock loads when the boat is on anchor in heavy or erratic winds and bouncing around and all of your chain is out, which is fairly common here. So the chain isn't transmitting the shock load directly to the ground tackle without something to take on the instantaneous strain. We also rig a nylon snubber when we are on chain only, but don't need it once we get 40' or more of the nylon rode over the bow roller. There are times we set anchor with some nylon rode out when we don't really need it for scope, just to quiet the anchoring gear down for the night. The chain transmits noise very well, but the nylon doesn't so much. Hope you make it to the west coast. The Inside Passage is incredible. Once you have been to Alaska, you never come all the way back.
